Professional Bio

Joy Karges-Brown, PT, EdD, MS, is currently a Professor and the Director of Clinical Education at the University of South Dakota (USD), Department of Physical Therapy in Vermillion, South Dakota, USA, where she has been employed since September 1996. She has a Bachelor of Science and post-professional Master of Science degrees in Physical Therapy, Doctor of Education in Educational Administration, and completed the APTA Education Leadership Institute Fellowship Program. Dr. Karges-Brown teaches courses related to clinical education, research, and ethical decision-making. She is a dissertation advisor for students in the PhD in Health Sciences Program at USD and has served on the USD Institutional Review Board for over 16 years. Dr. Karges-Brown's research interests are currently related to clinical education and various professional issues. She has several publications and has presented numerous times at APTA Combined Sections, APTA Annual Conference, and Education Leadership Conference meetings in the United States and World Physiotherapy Congress (WPC) meetings. Dr. Karges-Brown practiced five years in a variety of settings including acute care, cardiac rehab, outpatient orthopedics, aquatics, and home health prior to her academic career. She is a credentialed trainer through the APTA for the Credentialed Clinical Instructor Program (Level 1 and Level 2) and is currently serving as Chief Delegate for the APTA South Dakota Chapter in the APTA House of Delegates.
